Aromatherapy Oils

November 30, 2008

There are simply hundreds of aromatherapy oils available in shops and through mail order, and many of those oils would help to generate positive emotional well-being and bring balance and peace into your life.

There is no need to go to a qualified aromatherapist to begin learning about creating recipes and lotions in your own home, although if you want to have the benefits of a professional massage and treatment, the experience will be both uplifting and positive. A little research will be sufficient initially and providing you treat your chosen oils with respect and read up on any contra-indications relating to specific oils, then using aromatherapy oils is a positive step which will lead to feeling contented, relaxed and enjoying the whole creative process.

First of all, think about the type of recipes you would like to create i.e. skin care? Facemasks? Hand crème? Massage oils? Read up on the volume of recipes that you can find in any good aromatherapy books or, by reading articles on the Internet. A word of caution however, until you have learned more about the properties of individual oils, it may be sensible to limit creating your own versions and use existing recipes.

Child Art Therapy for Probing the Unconscious

November 28, 2008

Child art therapy involves different practices in education, rehabilitation and psychotherapy. A successful field today where art is incorporated into the psychotherapy, child art therapy is used as a means for children and their art therapist to not only visual the unconscious but also to eventually recognize it on a conscious level. Used to promote healing, art on a therapeutic level is used in many settings to benefit the child.

One of these major settings involve the school, where the art therapist helps the child with internal conflicts, using the child’s artwork to put into some form of positive action a change within. Child art therapy does not involve the art therapist alone, but the teaching and counseling staff in addition to the child’s parents and family members.

Many times, the students who are involved within the art therapy setting are special education students who are having difficulty. In this case, the child art therapy is used for conditions such as learning disabilities, emotional problems and disturbances, behavior disorders, and even physical handicaps that are the result of impaired gross and fine mother control.

Child art therapy requires a Masters level in education, which would be able to recognize the six stages of development in children’s drawings in addition to being able to connect intellectual growth in the child, their psychosocial stages of development, and this correspondence to the six stages of development in the child’s drawings. These six stages fall within certain age groups:

• The Scribble Stage - occurs 18 months to two years of age
This age demonstrates the ability to be aware of patterns, utilizing hand-eye coordination.

• The Pre-Schematic Stage - occurs four to seven years
The child may draw human figures with circles, and two dangling lines for legs.

• The Schematic Stage -occurs seven to nine years
The characteristics of this age group show what the child is thinking vs. what they are actually seeing.

• The Dawning Realism - occurs nine or two years
Demonstrating how things “really look” become important, which causes excessive frustration

When using child art therapy, the child is usually given five or six art directions by the art therapist. They will represent the child’s perception of themselves, their family, their school, or any aspect of their environment. When this is done, they will be evaluated by the art therapist in addition to looking at the child’s academic history, their personal development, and their family. Many things need to be evaluated–the child’s culture, their home life, or their financial situation, as drawings differ across the spectrum. One thing that has been noticed is when learning disabled children are found to have low intelligence measurements on standardized tests, they are significantly more advanced in creative and visual intelligence. A change such as adding a visual component may be needed to enhance their learning.

Learning the Techniques of Chakra Meditation

November 26, 2008

When it comes to meditation and all the different styles, there are many of them to choose from. In fact, one of the styles of meditation that is becoming more and more popular is chakra meditation; as it is very simple to learn.

Many times when people learn chakra meditation, they will not want to meditate any other way after that! For many people, chakra meditation is one of the easiest to learn as well as remember.

One thing that many people are unaware of is that chakra meditation is a form of meditation that focuses on certain parts of the body; such as your head, heart or any major organs. In fact, there are seven chakras located throughout everyone’s body (which are the perineum, swadhisthana, navel, heart, throat, eyebrows or forehead, and the top of the head). The main chakra is located just at the base of the spine, which is also known as the coccyx; and it is close to our body and allowing us to master it. Also, our health and security are both linked to the chakra.

Most often when people are taught chakra meditation, they are taught that chakra is an energy that is in the center of the body which is located right at the center of the nervous system; which is at the beginning of the spinal column and goes throughout the entire body to the top of the head. In fact, many people believe that it is the biophysical energy of a person’s body.

Just like any other type of meditation, when practicing chakra meditation, there are several things that you should follow or learn; especially if you are a beginner at meditating and learning on your own. Some of the things that you should first learn before beginning chakra meditation is that it can be done while sitting or lying down, you should adjust all your clothing as well as your body, you should have your eyes closed, when breathing keep your breath relaxed, slow and deepened (but you do not want to control it), find the spinal passage and bring awareness to it, focus on the general area of where the chakras are, before finishing the breath sound, chant “Om” 3 times.

Even though with meditation there are supposed to be no bad side effects, with chakra meditation there is. In fact, a couple of the side effects are excessive mental energy; especially if one does not have enough physical activities. Another problem that many beginners have problems with is getting an emotional imbalance which cause mood (personality) and behavioral problems.

If you are thinking about trying chakra meditation, it is best to go to a professional for advice and some lessons; as you will want to be as healthy as possible!

Aromatherapy Herbs for Health

November 24, 2008

The complex world of aromatherapy herbs can seem daunting to the complete beginner but once the basics have been learned, the beginner can gradually absorb more and more information as they practice using the herbs for themselves.

Quite simply, aromatherapy is a complimentary form of medicine which can be used to help treat disease or to help prevent it. It is a wonderful aid for diseases and conditions such as colds and flu, arthritis, tension headaches and migraines and is excellent for respiratory problems. It also encourages a feeling of well-being and emotional peace as it has a soothing effect on the mind, body and spirit.

Natural oils are depicted as being able to stimulate the brain in a positive way. It can help improve mood, increase clarity and relieve stress. There are also oils which benefit being mixed to form lotions and crèmes, for massage or for being used in the bath.

There are some very comprehensive books available on the use of aromatherapy herbs and it is recommended that beginners to this therapy read up as much as they can so they can have at least a basic understanding when looking to purchase essential oils.

Aromatherapy is an addictive therapy. Once the benefits have been felt, it is understandable that most people wish to learn more and eventually some even go on to qualifying as a therapist themselves or take a more creative route and begin to make their own aromatherapy herb skin care products or bath oils.

There are so many aromatherapy herbs to learn about but these include:

• Bergamot
• Cedarwood
• Clary Sage
• Frankincense
• Geranium
• Ginger
• Juniper berry
• Lavender
• Lemon grass
• Neroli
• Peppermint
• Pine
• Rosemary
• Sage
• Thyme

There are many more of course, but all of these herbs have contra-indications when it comes to their essential oils. As with any products, there are safety factors, which need to be adhered to, for example:

• They should not be taken internally
• They should not be used directly onto skin but must always be diluted in a good carrier oil such as sweet almond oil.
• For a longer shelf life, they must be stored in a dark glass bottle and kept out of direct light-artificial or natural
• Care should be taken when given to children or those women who are pregnant

Aromatherapy herbs have been used for centuries and its success and popularity looks set to increase yet further. Used frequently, it can instill a wondrous feeling of peace and tranquility into daily living and it can help to combat our reactions to extreme stressful situations, which is a must in today’s hectic and modern society.

Art Therapy for Treatment of Schizophrenia

November 22, 2008

Helping people communicate what they are unable to think and feel on a normal level is the ultimate goal of art therapy, and art therapy for treatment of schizophrenia has developed its initial stages within Pennsylvania’s Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic with the utmost of success. According to Robyn Cruz, director of creative and expressive arts therapies, about 2,500 schizophrenia patients participate in their art therapy program for outpatients with schizophrenia for the past 15 years.

The reason that art therapy for treatment of schizophrenia is successful is because art therapy is a safe and effective tool to use with people who cannot share their thoughts and feelings adequately through the tried-and-true traditional methods of “talk therapy” conversation. And the medications that are normally documented to reduce and control the mental illness of schizophrenia are often discontinued because the side effects are sometimes worse than the disease itself.

If that is the case, art therapy for treatment of schizophrenia offers a non-objective therapy to adults who are faced with such a situation on some level. It has been documented that children over five years of age can develop schizophrenia, but very seldom does it develop before adolescence. It is difficult to accurately distinguish between different types of mental disorder from another, especially when the symptoms of the schizophrenia exhibit elated or depressed mood swings. In this case, it can be schizophrenia, manic-depressive disorders, or even major depressive disorders with similarity in all of them.

If the person cannot be categorized because of this, they are occasionally diagnosed as having a schizoaffective disorder. But on October 19, 2005 scientific research was done on art therapy for treatment of schizophrenia by R Ruddy and D Milnes, titled in “Art Therapy for schizophrenia or schizophrenia-like illnesses,” published in Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, 2005, Issue 4.

According to the study, traditional medication is the treatment of choice for patients with schizophrenia or schizophrenia-like illnesses, but five to 15% of the patients still experience the same symptoms. The study explores the benefits of art therapy in addition to medication, but still required more research at the end regarding art therapy for treatment of schizophrenia, in order to make the study more meaningful and to determine the value of the art therapy. In 2005, art therapy was not as accepted as it is within the past year or so, with the emergency of interest in natural healing and alternative methods.

One treatment center for many all types of mental disorders, located at Skyland Trail at Atlanta, Georgia, focuses on expressive arts or art therapy for those diagnosed with schizophrenia. Through art therapy, those with schizophrenia can develop ways to achieve self-expression while simultaneously being able to utilize social skills, new hobbies and personal interests through their creativity.

Massaging Your way to Good Health Using the Foot Reflexology Chart

November 20, 2008

The theory of manipulating the foot in such a way as to apply pressure, massage, or squeezing specific locations that correlate to different areas in the body is an ancient practice. There are 10 such zones on the foot that have been mapped out and reproduced on a foot reflexology chart.

A foot reflexology chart is a very useful instrument that can be used for teaching purposes. The teacher of reflexology can use a large wall foot reflexology chart to illustrate the various pressure points. The student of reflexology can use a much smaller foot reflexology chart or diagram which is easily assessable in text books. There are books written specifically for the layman who just wants to learn and practice this ancient art for self improvement purposes as well.

Refelxology Foot Chart Basically a foot reflexology chart is quite colorful, implementing a different color or shade for the zones or pressure points that correspond to a body part. For example, the color red is used to locate the site needed to be manipulated on the foot to stimulate the heart organ. A foot reflexology chart will also be labeled as an added measure to avoid mistakes. This quick and easy reference is particularly useful for visual learners who normally get boggled down with written instruction. It is also very useful for the student who enjoys the attention to fine detail. Now the student and practitioner alike can rest assured that they can practice their technique for therapeutic purposes with utmost precision.

The reflexology experts are constantly developing new instruments to aid in the understanding and practice of reflexology. Besides the courses offered to students who whish to become practitioners, the various reflexology institutions and practitioners do realize that there are a growing number of laypeople who do not want to practice reflexology; they simply want to learn this holistic art for their own personal use. They have come to realize that a good foot message has many medicinal purposes.

Few people would argue the fact that a foot massage performed after a long hard day at work can lift a person’s mood, circulate endorphins within the body, stimulate the blood flow and relieve stress. There is nothing more pleasant than a relaxing foot massage for those tired, aching burning feet. But over an above massaging the foot for the sake of massage, the foot reflexology chart does show the corresponding areas of the body that will be massaged at the same time.

The nurse, for example, or waitress that walks and talks all day long on the job, not only would be taking care of her poor tired and often swollen feet, with the foot reflexology chart she would also be capable of massaging her voice box, (larynx) by massaging the corresponding area on the foot. She would have easy access to exact location of the voice box through a foot reflexology chart found in the conventional books, or on the internet, or most recently, on a pair of foot reflexology socks. All she would have to do is follow the diagram. There definitely is a foot reflexology chart for just about anyone, anywhere, to use in anyway that is appropriate.

Acupuncture Provides Diverse Benefits

November 19, 2008

Acupuncture is now considered alternative or complementary medicine, and there is evidence that these alternatives can be very helpful to people with certain problems or conditions. Acupuncture is originally from China where it is still widely practiced for the health of the Chinese people. These alternative or complementary medicines are now widely used in the United States and Western Europe for specific conditions or problems. Most medical professionals are trained in certain methods for maintaining and restoring the health of their patients. Not many medical professionals are trained in acupuncture. Most doctors do not immediately consider acupuncture as a method for treating their patients, but there is more enthusiasm for using these methods as a complement to modern medical practices.

Many cities and towns around the United States now have professionals who practice acupuncture. These professionals are highly skilled in the practice of alternative methods. Patients usually go to the practitioners of traditional medical treatment first, but many then seek help through acupuncture if they do not find satisfaction with regular doctors and nurses. Some insurance companies will now consider payments for acupuncture treatment. People will not usually seek acupuncture for serious conditions such as cancer or heart disease.

Acupuncture Proves Effective For Many Goals

People often seek acupuncture as a source of complementary medicine. This type of alternative medicine has been used for people suffering chronic pain, nausea and several other troubling conditions. These alternative medicine techniques are also used to help people break bad habits such as smoking. There has also been some success in using these alternative medicines to help people lose weight. The techniques used in acupuncture seem a bit harsh when first described, but the techniques are not painful or uncomfortable.

The professional acupuncturist uses needles inserted at specific points in the body to achieve the goals of the patient. The skilled professional uses needles that are hygienic to prevent any type of infection. These needles are much thinner than the needles that people are used to when they are in need of a traditional shot. The needles are inserted at strategic points chosen for specific benefits. The skilled person will insert the needles in specific points for someone with headaches. The same professional will insert the needles differently for those trying to kick a bad habit. There have been many people who have used these alternative medicines with great success, and the demonstrated success for some conditions has led to more people seeking this type of treatment.

Benefits of Natural Health

November 17, 2008

An increasing number of people are turning to natural health for various reasons. For some, natural health may be a way to maintain their present health. Others may do it in an effort to treat or cure an illness. Regardless of the reason, natural health results in many benefits such as increased energy, better concentration, and improved skin and hair among many others benefits.

It seems that the majority of people are tired these days. Just one look at all the commercials for extra caffeinated beverages will tell you that. A great percentage relies on caffeine to make it through their workday. Although tiredness or fatigue can be a symptom of a number of health conditions, simple lifestyle changes can do wonders.

For example, eating healthy, nutritional meals should be on the top of your list to gain increased energy. The body can only use as fuel what you put in it. If you consume processed, dead foods, your body won’t have much to convert to fuel. On the other hand, consuming a variety of live vegetables and fruits as well as whole grains will give your body the enzymes and amino acids necessary to function properly.

A second natural health benefit is improved concentration. The lack of it is a concern experienced by many. Besides eating healthy, moderate exercise and stress management techniques may play a role in your concentration level. Studies indicate that prolonged, chronic stress can damage brain cells and affect memory and concentration. A positive outlook on life and the use of essential oils such as lavender, sage, cedar, and geranium can help to reduce stress and increase concentration. You can use these oils topically or in a diffuser. Put a few drops in your bath water to produce a relaxing effect. Another natural approach to improved concentration is to take supplements. Omega-3 fatty acids is a good supplement to have on the top of your list. Not only is it good for concentration, but it also helps with joint and cardiovascular problems.

Finally, a third natural health benefit is noticeably healthier hair and skin. The body’s physical appearance is a reflection of its inner condition. The skin is the body’s largest organ and it needs nutrients same as any other internal organ to function properly. Additionally, hair is also a reflection of the body’s overall health condition. An adequate supply of vitamins and minerals, a healthy diet, and moderate exercise to promote circulation, will often result in healthy hair. It’s interesting that if your body receives a limited supply of nutrients, it will direct those nutrients to the main internal organs first to keep your body functioning. Consequently, once the body receives an adequate supply of nutrients, the hair will be the last on the list to improve.

Increased energy, better concentration, and healthy skin and hair are just a few benefits to reap if you implement a natural health approach in your life. As you can see, there is much to gain and nothing to loose. As people become more proactive in health management, natural health is the solution they’re looking for.

How An Iridology Camera Is Used

November 15, 2008

An iridology camera is a curious looking device that is used by practitioners of this form of alternative medicine. Very similar in appearance to an optometrist’s camera, this specialized machine is designed to give practitioners a way to obtain very high resolution images of a patient’s eye – more specifically the iris.

Iridology camera set ups are used in the practice of this pre-diagnostic medicine. They are considered critical links in this form of study for a number of reasons. When an iridology camera is used, the resulting images are then studied very closely for anomalies found within the iris of the eye itself. This is done in one of two ways:

• Visually. An iridologist can look at the images produced from the camera to locate potential anomalies in the iris. These might include such things as lines, arcs, rings or specks.
• Computer-based. When a computer interface is used with an iridology camera, the resulting images are scanned by specialized programs. These programs than highlight potential anomalies for further study by the iridologist.

What Happens Next:

After anomalies are located within the iris, if there are any, further study is indicated. The different specs, spots and lines are reviewed for coloration and location. Iridologists believe that different portions of the iris correspond to different parts of the body. A black speck in the part of the iris that corresponds to the liver, for example, could indicate scarred, damaged or dying tissue. To move this process along, practitioners match up anomalies with the different portions of the body they correspond to.

The camera is considered a critical link because it enables more in-depth study than a visual exam would allow for. Some anomalies can be rather hard to detect with the naked eye. It simply takes time to fully study and correlate findings. The camera and resulting images provide a better basis for study. It also frees up patients who would otherwise have to sit for extremely long periods of time as practitioners study their eyes and draw the appropriate conclusions based on an iridology chart.

What Iridology Tells Practitioners:

Iridology is not considered a diagnostic science even by its practitioners. Instead, it provides a starting point for study of problems or potential problems within the body. When anomalies are found, it often indicates a need for further diagnostic study.

An iridology camera is designed to give practitioners a way to obtain a very detailed image of a patient’s eye. This image is then studied closely for potential anomalies before more advanced procedures are indicated. Without the camera, practitioners must rely on the naked eye, which can easily miss very important signs of potential problems.

Aromatherapy Diffuser

November 13, 2008

Allow the Aromatherapy Diffuser to Diffuse your Mood

The fact that certain scents can relax us, or lift our mood substantially may not be news to many, but even whilst many of us realise this fact, still few of us use aromatherapy to its full affect and sadly we miss out on some of the great benefits which we could use to help us live our life in a natural and balanced way. Aromatherapy after all is a natural, holistic complimentary therapy, it can aid us by helping us to connect with our inner spiritual self, connecting with our creativity, by healing us physically and emotionally, and by its powerful aroma affecting our moods.

Aromatherapy can also be used in every aspect of our lives whether at home or at work, to relax us, keep us calm, or it can be used to help us to feel a little more prepared before going into difficult work meetings providing us with a feeling of positively during crucial times and it can equally help us to create a more romantic setting when at home if so desired.

There are so many products available for us to use such as:

• Aromatherapy candles
• Aromatherapy essential oils
• Oil burners
• Aromatherapy necklaces
• Aromatherapy diffusers

Diffusers are probably lesser-known elements of aromatherapy but are very simple to use and can easily be incorporated into the home environment without any fuss. Light bulb ring diffusers are inexpensive and readily available from retail outlets or through mail order. They are fitted to the light bulb after a few drops of oil have been placed into the special inner channel. When the light bulb is switched on, the warmth from the bulb gently heats the oil and the fragrance is gently distributed around the room.

There are other diffusers too, which can be useful such as the battery operated fan diffuser. This is portable and quite small so is non-obtrusive. The fan inside distributes the oil in waves around the room. There are also electric fans, which can be used giving a greater choice of selection to the general consumer.

The choice of oil used is largely dependant on mood so think carefully before purchasing, the best way of course is to be able to test them to see whether the scent appeals to you, especially if your primary aim is not to use them for healing but as a mood enhancer.

To heighten the benefits still further when at home, it can be useful to play some therapeutic aromatherapy music. This has been specifically created to enhance the sensations experienced by the oils filtering through the air in your environment.

By incorporating aromatherapy into your life as much as possible, it can help to create a better life balance whilst staying in touch with nature.
